We think PYRAN® Platinum is simply the best fire-protective glass available. It is made on a next generation micro-float production line that makes a very high quality premium glass-ceramic. Many people think it looks better than traditional rolled products like Firelite® that may require corrective grinding and polishing. Where Firelite® is yellow-brown in color, PYRAN® Platinum has a hint of grey/green like regular glass. And Glassopolis has great pricing on PYRAN® Platinum. In terms of optical quality, color and price, you can't beat PYRAN® Platinum from Glassopolis.
PYRAN® Platinum fire-rated glazing material is made from a transparent glass-ceramic with a thickness of 3/16” (5mm). It is intended for use in non-impact, safety-rated locations such as transoms and windows with fire-rating requirements up to 90 minutes. It is available in impact-safety rated versions as well, PYRAN Platinum L is a laminated version and PYRAN Platinum F is a filmed version.

After cutting, each lite of PYRAN® Platinum fire-protective glass shall be permanently labeled according to code requirements with product and manufacturer’s ID, UL Mark, fire rating, etc.
Fire-rated glass can be labelled only by a certified and listed manufacturer such as Glassopolis. All certified and listed manufacturers meet rigid standards, undergo regular quality and procedural audits, and are re-listed on an annual basis. Glassopolis is required to make sure the glass you receive is properly labelled and meets the classification standards noted on the label.
STORAGE AND HANDLING
PYRAN® Platinum fire-protective glass should be handled with care during transportation, storage, inspection, and installation. It should be stored in dry conditions only and needs to be stacked upright or at a slight angle. In addition, the panels must be separated by an appropriate material, such as soft pads made of cork and the bottom edge must be supported along its entire length.
PYRAN® Platinum shall only be installed into fire-rated frame and window assemblies carrying the same rating. Each PYRAN® Platinum panel should be inspected carefully before installation, and any pieces with visible edge or surface damage should be sorted out. All glazing components and the stop height must be chosen according to the PYRAN® Platinum UL classification. The panel must be placed on calcium silicate or hardwood setting block s and glazed using PYRAN® Platinum classified glazing tape, such as closed cell PVC, Fiber frax tape or Pemko FG3000S90. The installation of the framed unit must comply with the frame supplier’s instructions. Please call Glassopolis or visit www.GLASSOPOLIS.com for our related technical bulletins
MAINTENANCE AND CARE
To maintain the aesthetics, it is important to keep the panel clean. A soft, clean, non-abrasive cloth and a mild soap, detergent, or non-abrasive window cleaning solution is suitable for cleaning. After cleaning, rinse immediately with clean water and remove any excess water from the panel surface. Also, do not allow any metal or hard parts of the cleaning equipment to come in contact with the panel surface.
PYRAN® Platinum is a specially developed glass-ceramic, that fulfills the fire-protective rating requirements. The production process may create certain optical imperfections, such as bubbles or knots. Since these do not generally impair the transparency or the technical performance of the glass-ceramic, they do not represent cause for rejection or replacement.
For door applications, note that using fire-rated glass into a non-fire rated door results in a non-fire-rated door. Also, doors are always allowed to have a fire-rating less than the surrounding fire-rated fixed glazing. Importantly, in the US glass in doors always requires an impact rating.
PYRAN can not be tempered. For impact-safety rated applications, choose PYRAN Platinum F (PYRAN with safety film on one side) or PYRAN Platinum L (two lites of PYRAN laminated to a special interlayer).
For sound reduction applications, there are at least three routes to drive up the STC ratings of a lite of fire-rated glass. One is to substitute with the filmed version (PYRAN Platinum F). Another is to substitute with the laminated version (PYRAN Platinum L). A third option is to incorporate the glass within an insulating glass unit (PYRAN Thermal). All options have the potential to drive up an STC rating by a few points, but require allowances to be made for perimeter conditions, actual dimensions, ambient temperatures, etc.
Insulated glazing units are available using all PYRAN® products. Glassopolis can supply with PYRAN® IGUs to improve thermal insulation energy efficiency without altering the fire-rating.
